What are some fun cars to own/drive that are fuel efficient?

I am aware of the Civic Si and the Sentra SE-R, but do any of you have any other vehicles in mind? Let me know about your experiences.

  1. Mazda Miata, Toyota Corolla, Chevy Sprint Turbo (that's from the 80s) - there's lots of others. I used to have huge fun in a Toyota MR2 - a berserker four-wheel motorcycle. Shift points at 7200 rpm, a happy-go-lucky little four-banger engine, a telepathic tranny and featherweight clutch, and it got all of 35 mpg even with me driving like a complete gokart fool.
  2. Look at a Mazda MX-5 Miata, or anything else lightweight and/or rear-wheel drive. I owned a '91 Mazda MX-5 Miata and a '00 Toyota MR2 Spyder. I loved both of them because even though they weren't the fastest cars on the road, they were rear-wheel-drive and could hug corners tremendously. I never had a serious problem with either one and got between 28-33mpg. Of the two, I would recommend the Miata, as they are much more common and easier to find.
  3. If they are fun to drive they are NOT fuel efficient! You have to draw the line somewhere, either fuel efficient or fun and powerful. It sucks that the oil companies has the government (s) wrapped around their fingers. There is no reason not to be able to get decent gas mileage out of the big engines. It acan and was done years back in the 80's. But that doesn't put money in the oil companies' pockets.
  4. 1985 Honda Prelude/1996 Honda Prelude with the manual transmition.
